9 Silent Trichomoniasis Symptoms

August 10, 2018 | New Articles: Conditions

Trichomoniasis often referred to simply as “trich”, is a sexually transmitted disease (STD). It is caused by an infection Trichomonas vaginalis, a protozoan parasite. It affects both men and women and it is extremely common; however, only 30 percent of those who are infected with this STD show symptoms, and symptoms of Trichomoniasis present more in women than in men. Generally, symptoms of the infection are diagnosed during a routine exam.

Trichomoniasis is a highly curable infection; but, if it is left untreated, those who have it are more likely to spread it – as well as other STDs. Also, pregnant women who are infected with this parasite are more likely to deliver a pre-term baby.

Since 70 percent of those infected do not present any symptoms, if you have this infection, it can be difficult to determine. With that said, there are some signs that could indicate Trichomoniasis. If you notice any of the following signs, make sure you schedule an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible.

1. Abnormal Vaginal Discharge

Women who are infected with Trichomoniasis may notice the presence of abnormal vaginal discharge. It is normal for women to experience some vaginal discharge. If the discharge is clear or milky white in appearance, it usually isn’t a cause for concern. However, if discharge appears yellowish or green in color, has a sticky texture, and has a foul odor, it could be a cause for concern.

As the parasite that causes Trichomoniasis infects the vagina, this female body part may produce odd-colored discharge. There are many conditions that can cause abnormal vaginal discharge. That’s why, if you notice the presence of discharge that appears to have a strange color, texture, or odor, it is important to schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider as soon as possible. The sooner this infection is treated, the less likely it will spread to others through sexual intercourse.
