Tendonitis is caused when there is damage to a tendon. The tendons are what connects the muscles to the bones. Most often, tendonitis will occur in the knees and elbows. It may also affect a person’s shoulders. Tendonitis can be difficult to diagnose as it shares many similar symptoms to other conditions such as Achilles heel, bursitis, and arthritis.

The best way to determine if you are suffering from tendonitis is to look for the several symptoms of the condition occurring at the same time. If you have pain, stiffness, and swelling near the joints, there is a chance that your tendon may be damaged. Your doctor will be able to determine the underlying cause of your pain by running a series of tests.

If you have tendonitis, you are more prone to other issues with the muscles and joints as damage to the tendon can lead to weakening muscles. Here are 14 signs of tendonitis to consider.

1. Swelling

Swelling is one of the most common signs or symptoms of a tendonitis. The damage in the area will cause blood to rush to the muscle that has been affected. The blood will start to pool in the area as a way to help prevent infection. It also starts to rebuild the tissue using amino acids as well as other nutrients.

If you notice swelling in any area of the body, this is a sign of the natural healing process, so it should not be considered as a negative. However, the swelling can cause some discomfort, especially if it starts to put pressure and strain on the tissue surrounding the area. The swelling may also make it difficult to move the spine and joints in a normal fashion.

If you notice swelling, treat with an ice pack alternating 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off. This should help to reduce some of the swelling and alleviate some of the pain that is associated with tendonitis.

2. Pain Around the Joints

Another common symptom of tendonitis and one of the first that is often noticed is pain around the joints. It is important to note that simply having pain in your joints is not a sure sign that you are suffering from tendonitis.

You may have just pulled something while exercising or working and a bit of rest will resolve the issue. If the pain does not go away, there is a chance that you may have something more serious than just a pulled muscle and the tendon may be damaged.

The joints are prone to damage of the tendons more than other parts of the body because the joints are where we bend. If you have engaged in activities that are common causes of tendonitis, such as baseball, tennis or painting a house, there is reason to suspect that your pain around the joints is caused by tendonitis.

""

3. Stiffness Around the Joints

The tendons are responsible for facilitating movement. They are what make the muscles move the joints. If the tendon becomes damaged, you may notice that your joints are stiff. When one of the tendons becomes inflamed it can cause movements to become stiff or even achy.

This stiffness and achiness are caused by the inflammation as the tendons are not capable of doing their job in the way that they were meant to. If you are experiencing achiness or stiffness in your joints, there is a good chance that you may have damaged a tendon. The inflammation of the tendons will make it difficult to move freely.

The first step you need to take is to reduce the inflammation. Rest and ice can help with this. Once the inflammation goes down, movements should become less stiff. Stretching out can also help loosen up the tendons, which will allow the joints to move more freely.

4. Muscle Weakness

Tendons connect the bone and the muscles. This is their purpose. If a tendon is injured, it can cause the muscles in the area where the damaged tendon is located to become weaker as a result. If the tendon is not repaired right away, the muscle may atrophy.

This can make it take a long time to regain strength in the muscle that is affected. When the muscles start to weaken, you may avoid using it, which in turn will make it even weaker. This can lead to a vicious cycle because as the tendons and muscles weaken, they become more prone to injury.

This is particularly true in the shoulders, knees, and elbows. One of the best ways to avoid tendonitis is to exercise often. Make sure that you do not overdo it with exercise as this can cause issues as well. It is important to find a good balance.

5. Warm Sensation in the Area

A person who has developed tendonitis may find that the area that is affected feels warm to the touch. This warm sensation may or may not come with swelling, inflammation, tenderness, and pain. Padding can be used in order to protect the area that is infected.

The padding will reduce the amount of contact with the tendon in order to keep it safe. In addition, you may want to apply a cold or ice pack to the area. This can help to lower the warming sensation that you are feeling. Ice packs can also help to reduce swelling and the pain from the area.

It is also recommended that you experience inflammation after exercising that you ice the area to help reduce swelling and inflammation. When you are recuperating from tendonitis, it is important to make sure that you stay away from strenuous activities and get plenty of rest to allow the body time to heal.

6. Grinding Sensation

If you place your palm on your tendon and you feel a grinding sensation, there is a chance that you are suffering from crepitus. Crepitus is one of the symptoms of tendonitis. The grinding sensation is the result of swelling and inflammation around the tendon that has been damaged.

When a person is suffering from tendonitis, the damaged and injured cells are brought to the surface. This is what causes you to feel a grinding sensation in the area. Grinding sensations alone does not necessarily mean you have tendonitis. This sensation may also be caused by deterioration of the cartilage that surrounds the bone or because a joint is not aligned properly.

A popping or snapping noise is heard when the tendon stretches across the bone when the damage has been done to the tendon. Look for other symptoms of tendonitis as well in order to determine the cause of the grinding sensations that you are experiencing.

7. Dull Shoulder Pain

One form of tendonitis is called rotator cuff tendonitis. This type of tendonitis occurs in the shoulder and often causes a person to experience a dull pain throughout the area of their shoulder. Often times the pain is not from one specific area of the shoulder.

At times the pain may radiate from the shoulder to the chest and also be felt in other areas of the body as well. The pain may be more intense at night when trying to go to sleep. If you work at a job or play a sport that requires consistent elevation of your shoulder or arms, you may have reason to suspect that you have developed tendonitis. Repetitive motion and overuse are often the causes of this condition.

People who are at risk for developing rotator cuff tendonitis include, welders, painters, tennis players, baseball players, and carpenters. Males over the age of 40 who are in these occupations are more at risk for developing this type of tendonitis.

8. Pain Near the Elbow and Knee

There are several types of tendonitis that a person may suffer from that involve the knees and elbows. If you have pain that starts on the outside of the elbow that extends toward the wrist, you may have something often referred to as tennis elbow.

The tendons that attach the muscles of the lower arm to the bone could be damaged and may become painful and swollen. Anyone can get a tennis elbow, not just those who play tennis. Pain that is located in the inner part of the elbow is often referred to as golfer’s elbow. This is a result of the muscles located on the inner arm becoming injured or inflamed in some way.

There are similar conditions that a person may develop that start on the inside or on the outside of the knee. If you are experiencing these types of pain, there is a chance that your tendons are damaged.

""

9. Coordination

In addition to the muscles become weak, it is common for a person who suffers from tendonitis to also experience coordination loss. When you have lost coordination it may become difficult to pick items up and not drop them. You may also be more prone to simply falling over, depending on what type of tendonitis has developed.

One of the reasons for this is because of a loss of strength in the tendons and also in the muscles. This loss of strength can make it more difficult to carry out simple movements with the same precision as you could in the past. Loss of coordination may also result from the way the muscle is receiving input.

The muscle and tendon unit is responsible for providing us with additional sense. If the muscle and tendon unit is damaged, it can affect your ability to know where your body is in its space at any given moment.

""

10. Discoloration

If you have damaged your tendon, oftentimes you are going to notice swelling and redness in the area of the tendon that was damaged. This is the body’s way of trying to fix the damage that was done.

Blood is sent by the body to the area in order to try to provide the proper nutrients and antibodies that are needed in order to begin the healing process. In some instances, the area that was injured may become discolored. The area may start to look black, bluish, or yellowish. When this occurs, it suggests that you may be suffering from an infection that is causing the tendonitis.

If you have an infection, a shot of steroids is not going to fix the problem, you will need a course of antibiotics to try to get rid of the infection. Bacteria is the cause of the discoloration, which is why it is important to get it treated right away, before it becomes an even bigger issue.

""

11. Fever

In some cases, the tendon may become infected. In these cases, a person may experience nausea or vomiting and will likely run a fever. When the tendon is infected, it can cause a number of health issues.

Anyone who is experiencing pain and any of the other symptoms on this list and also runs a fever and is simply not feeling well should seek medical attention right away. A fever is a sign of an infection and a medical professional should investigate the cause in order to make sure that proper treatment is provided. The tendon will need to be treated with rest, ice, and possibly physical therapy.

In addition, the infection that is causing the fever and other symptoms will need to be treated as well, possibly with a round of antibiotics. It is important to get the proper care needed to treat this issue in order to heal properly.

""

12. Muscular Imbalance

Muscular imbalance occurs when one set of muscles becomes more developed than the other set. If you have been diagnosed with chronic tendonitis and it has affected you for a long period of time, you may notice that the muscular tone on one side of your body becomes more developed that the muscular tone on the other side of the body.

For example, if you have tendonitis in your left knee joint, your right leg may become more developed than your left. This is caused by not using your left knee as much because it causes pain to do so. Essentially, when you are suffering from tendonitis you are going to avoid doing things that cause you to experience pain.

This can result in one area of the body becoming more fit than the other. One of the ways to avoid this is to make sure that you are exercising the damaged tendon regularly and using each side of your body as equally as possible.

""

13. Mobility Issues

Tendonitis can cause a person to develop mobility issues. The muscle-tendon units in the body do not only provide a force to work the joints, but they also play a role in elasticity. This elasticity is what allows us to become more flexible.

When the tendon swells, it can reduce our flexibility. You may also find that the changes in the development of the muscles can cause other issues as well. If one of your sets of muscles is stronger than the others, it can place more pressure on those joints, which may make it difficult to go through with their usual range of motion.

Twisting, squatting, pulling, and pressing are all basic movements that we should be able to do. If you have lost range of motion in any of these motions, it is important to find out why. Your doctor will help you determine the underlying cause and begin a treatment plan to help get these mobility issues under control.

""

14. Deferred Pain

Deferred pain is a pain that experienced in another part of the body and not in the actual area where you were injured. For example, if you have tendonitis in your elbow. The pain that you are experiencing is deferred to the arm.

People who suffer from tendonitis often experience deferred pain. Tendonitis in the knee often results in a person experiencing pain in their lower back. The reason for this is because you are compensating as a result of the pain and changing the way that you walk and move in a way that puts more pressure on the back.

It is common to feel this in the lower area of the back because this area is affected by the hip extensors and hip flexors. If you are suffering from the symptoms of tendonitis, it is important to get it checked out quickly in order to prevent some of the corrective behaviors that may lead to more discomfort and pain in the long run.
